Better To Be A Divorcee With Money – Lawyer Sparks Debate With Marriage Advice

Published

South African lawyer Akani Mongwane has sparked debate after advising women who are unhappy in their marriages to consider divorce rather than remain in relationships that may negatively affect their well-being.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Mongwane shared the advice in a Facebook post on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, arguing that women should not endure unhappy marriages at the expense of their emotional and physical health.

The lawyer suggested that prolonged marital unhappiness could contribute to serious health concerns, including depression and high blood pressure. He also maintained that women should consider their financial circumstances and future security when making decisions about leaving their marriages.

In his post, Mongwane encouraged unhappy wives to begin divorce proceedings rather than continue living in relationships they find distressing.

“Divorce him before you are diagnosed with depression and high blood pressure. Men will never change. If we can start your divorce now, by December you will be eating his pension money with your kids. At least be a divorcee with money rather than being a miserable wife,” he wrote.

He further questioned why women should remain in marriages in which they are unhappy, suggesting that financial security after divorce could be preferable to continued dissatisfaction.

His comments have brought renewed attention to discussions about marital happiness, divorce, financial independence and the importance of emotional well-being in relationships.

While Mongwane’s remarks present divorce as an option for women experiencing persistent marital unhappiness, decisions about ending a marriage can involve complex emotional, financial, legal and family considerations. His comments reflect his personal views on the issue.
