Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja emphasized that collaboration between the military and media should extend beyond reporting on conflicts and terrorism. Speaking at the Nigerian Army Civil-Military Cooperation Quarterly Media Chat in Kano, he urged media practitioners to engage actively in national development, peacebuilding, and community relations.
Represented by Major General Mayirensa Saraso, Lagbaja stressed the importance of professionalism, accuracy, impartiality, and patriotism in media reportage to safeguard national interests and security. He highlighted the theme, “Synergizing Civil-Military Cooperation for National Security,” noting the critical roles played by both media and the army in Nigeria’s security imperatives.
Acknowledging press freedom, Lagbaja called for responsible journalism, cautioning against fake news and content that could undermine national unity. He reaffirmed the army’s commitment to transparency in communication while emphasizing the need for balanced and objective reporting. Stressing the partnership’s broader scope, he advocated joint efforts in promoting positive initiatives and enhancing public trust.
In conclusion, Lagbaja underscored the army’s dedication to combating insecurity and restoring peace and development. He urged continued support from Nigerians and cooperation from the media to achieve these goals, promoting a strong relationship grounded in mutual respect and shared responsibility.
