Reflecting on the pivotal Aburi meeting in Ghana, Gowon recalled Ojukwu’s insistence on standing firm on the agreements made there, to which he responded, “From Aburi you will fall.” He recounted the efforts to address the chaos following the January 15 coup, detailing how he became involved in quelling the violence in Lagos, while the situation deteriorated in Kaduna.

Gowon noted that their meeting in Aburi was initially intended to reach a military consensus. However, he found that Ojukwu arrived with a prepared memorandum that outlined his demands, which Gowon rejected. Despite agreeing on some points during their discussions, Ojukwu later misrepresented the outcome upon returning, claiming they had agreed to a separation, which sowed further confusion and conflict.

In the wake of escalating tensions, Gowon implemented a state of emergency and created 12 new states to ensure no region dominated the political landscape, aiming to bolster national unity. He also mentioned his plans for a new federal capital in Abuja, citing the need for a neutral location for governance.

Gowon expressed that while he aimed to return Nigeria to democracy, the political environment at the time was fraught with division, reminiscent of the pre-coup period. Ultimately, he reiterated that discussions continued, but Ojukwu’s refusal to attend subsequent meetings hindered progress towards resolving their differences.
