Atedo Peterside, the founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank, has sharply criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his remarks made at the funeral of the late Access Bank CEO, Herbert Wigwe, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Peterside labeled Akpabio’s comments as self-centered, lacking in sensitivity, and overall poorly judged. READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE
During the funeral, Akpabio drew ire for his confrontation with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, in response to the governor’s poignant inquiry into the motives behind political struggles and power-related violence.
Governor Fubara had posed a rhetorical question, questioning the purpose of political strife and its toll on human life, urging the political class to reflect on their actions. However, Akpabio’s retort, which suggested that if politics held no significance, the governor should relinquish his position, missed the mark according to critics.
Peterside, in a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, expressed dismay at Akpabio’s lack of tact, particularly highlighting the senator’s complaint about receiving less applause than Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election. This complaint, Peterside argued, demonstrated a lack of sensitivity to the solemn occasion and misplaced priorities on the part of Akpabio.
The incident at Wigwe’s funeral serves as a reminder of the need for politicians to exhibit empathy and focus on addressing pressing issues rather than engaging in self-serving rhetoric. Peterside’s rebuke underscores the importance of statesmanship and decorum, especially in moments of mourning and reflection.
The Stanbic IBTC Bank boss also berated Akpabio for asking the people at the funeral to join him in consoling Wigwe’s wife who was also lying dead in one of the three caskets in their front.
He said, “For the record, I was among those who found the Senate President’s comments at the Wigwe Family Funeral in PH to be in poor taste.
“He began by lamenting that @PeterObi received greater applause than he (Akpabio) got & later told us to join him in consoling the widow who was lying in one of the 3 caskets in front of him. Jokes?
“Political jibes at a solemn Combined Funeral? Methinks that was self-centred & totally insensitive.”
