In response to the alarming surge in banditry and kidnapping incidents across the nation, concerned Nigerians are increasingly vocal about addressing the issue.
Among those condemning the disturbing trend is Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese, who emphasizes that individuals closely associated with bandits should be held accountable for their actions.
Kukah asserts that statements from such individuals not only fuel the crisis but also warrant thorough investigation to uncover any potential collaboration with criminal elements.
Expressing deep concern over the recent wave of school abductions, Kukah questions the government’s failure to probe individuals claiming connections to bandits.
In an interview, the Catholic cleric criticizes the government’s lack of decisive action to curb the relentless kidnappings, which he warns could have lasting psychological effects on the abducted children.
He states, “It is evident that the highest levels of government are aware of the situation, as the intelligence community likely possesses crucial information.”
Kukah insists on the urgent need for the government to identify and scrutinize those who profess knowledge about the whereabouts of bandits or engage in collaboration with them.
His call for action comes in the wake of the recent abduction of 137 schoolchildren, underlining the pressing need for concrete measures to address the escalating security challenges.
