The deceased have been identified as Mallum Shettima, Maimuna Akura, Umira Bulama, and Yagana Kawu. In a statement, Daso detailed the sequence of events, noting that police received a distress call from a Good Samaritan at the Dikwa Divisional Police Headquarters regarding the accident, which took place in the Bakassi community between Mafa and Dikwa.
“The canoe, carrying several passengers, was overwhelmed by floodwaters, tragically resulting in the deaths of four females from Bulabulin Ward, Dikwa,” Daso explained. The victims included Ya Mallum Shettima, an adult female from Marte LGA, and three children: Maimuna Akura, age 10; Umira Alhaji Bulama, age 6; and Yagana Bulama Kawu, age 5 months.
Following the incident, police officers rushed to the scene, where they rescued the victims and transported them to a nearby hospital, where a doctor confirmed their deaths. The bodies were subsequently released to their families for burial according to Islamic rites.
In light of this tragedy, the PPRO emphasized the importance of safety protocols for boat operators. He urged operators to provide safety buoys and life jackets for all passengers, highlighting that adherence to safety measures is essential, especially as the state continues to recover from recent flooding that has already claimed numerous lives.
“Given the recent canoe accident in Dikwa, we want to stress the critical need for safety protocols to prevent further tragedies. All canoe operators must ensure that safety equipment is available for their passengers. The safety and security of Borno residents are our top priority, particularly during this challenging period marked by flooding,” Daso concluded.
