Senator Samuel Anyanwu has been embroiled in controversy following the Court of Appeal in Enugu’s ruling, which upheld Sunday Ude-Okoye as the PDP National Secretary, replacing Anyanwu. The appellate court’s December 20 decision affirmed an earlier ruling by the Enugu High Court.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, confirmed the party’s intent to comply with the court ruling. As a result, Ude-Okoye officially assumed office at the PDP secretariat on December 30, stating, “I am resuming today in obedience to the Appeal Court ruling that sacked the former National Secretary and made me the National Secretary of PDP.”
However, Senator Anyanwu disclosed in a phone interview with Daily Sun that he had appealed the ruling and filed for a stay of execution. He maintained that he remains the party’s recognized representative to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). “I have appealed. Nothing is happening. I have filed a stay. All those things are just social media propaganda. Besides, I have a judgment that no one in PDP can send anything to INEC except me,” Anyanwu insisted.
In the wake of these developments, Anyanwu reportedly instructed security personnel at the Wadata Plaza not to grant journalists access to the premises. On Monday, when Mr. Orji attempted to enter the secretariat to cover the situation, he was turned away by security personnel, who advised him to seek authorization from Senator Anyanwu or the Chief Security Officer.
As Mr. Orji returned to his car, Okoronkwo confronted and assaulted him. Witnesses reported that Okoronkwo slapped the journalist multiple times, damaged his mobile phone, and had to be restrained by security personnel. Despite being led away, Okoronkwo allegedly continued issuing threats against Mr. Orji and other journalists.
