Breaking: APC Moves To Prolong Ekiti, Osun Caretaker Leadership

The decision was taken on Friday, March 27, at the party’s 8th National Convention and was later ratified by delegates, who are the party’s highest decision-making body. Senator Barau Jibrin, representing Kano North, moved the motion, explaining that the tenure of caretaker committees at the ward, local government, and state levels in the affected states was initially set to expire at the end of March 2026.

He noted that prevailing political circumstances made it difficult to conduct new congresses at this time. According to him, the extension is necessary to ensure stability within the party and to allow for proper coordination ahead of future congresses and electoral activities. The motion was seconded by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and received unanimous approval.

In a related development, the convention also dissolved the party’s National Working Committee, paving the way for the emergence of new national officers. The motion was moved by the APC National Legal Adviser, Abdulkarim Kana, citing provisions of the party’s constitution, and was seconded by Deputy National Secretary, Abdulkarim Oluopolekana.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, also proposed the adoption of a consensus approach for electing new national officers, a motion that was seconded by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani. Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved a motion to formally adopt and ratify congresses conducted across the country, which was seconded by Governor Hope Uzodimma.

All motions presented at the convention were unanimously adopted by delegates, highlighting the party’s unified stance on key organisational matters. During the convention held at Eagle Square in Abuja, the APC also elected new national officers, with Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda emerging as National Chairman.

He will be supported by two Deputy National Chairmen: Ali Bukar Dalori for the North and Dr. Benjamin Obi Nwoye for the South. Other key positions filled include Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru as National Secretary and Prof. AbdulKarim Abubakar Kana as Deputy National Secretary, along with several other officials across various roles within the party’s leadership structure.
