BREAKING: Enugu Rep Removed By Tribunal; LP Candidate Announced As Winner

Previously, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced Atigwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the rerun election held on February 3, 2024. INEC reported that Atigwe received 23,863 votes, narrowly defeating Agbo, who received 23,226 votes. Agbo, who initially won the February 25, 2023 election but was later disqualified by the appellate court, contested the rerun results at the tribunal.

Agbo’s legal team argued that the rerun election was marred by errors in vote counting and significant violations of electoral laws.

On Wednesday, August 14, the tribunal, chaired by Justice H. N. Kunaza, ruled in favor of Agbo. The tribunal invalidated the extra 2,000 votes attributed to Atigwe and restored the results from the February 25, 2023 election, which had Agbo leading with 28,870 votes compared to Atigwe’s 14,229.

The tribunal also determined that Atigwe was not duly elected, as Agbo had actually received 23,221 votes against Atigwe’s 21,863. As a result, Atigwe’s certificate of return is to be revoked, and a new certificate will be issued to Agbo.
