According to Odumosu, the intelligence personnel acted on a tip-off and placed the suspects under surveillance. Pius Aondoakaa, seeking a higher bid, rejected an offer of 12 million naira and insisted on 20 million naira for the “He-goat” (referring to the boy). Additionally, he offered a “she-goat” (girl child) for 15 million naira, claiming the father wanted to use the proceeds for his other children.
To apprehend the culprits, the FCT Intelligence Personnel posed as buyers and lured the father, Mr. China Telpesa Solomon Tali, to Abuja on January 10, 2024. The transaction was agreed upon, and the sum of 20 million naira was settled for the eight-year-old boy, Ushafa Tali. Subsequently, the undercover officers intervened, arresting Chinana Tali and recovering the child.
Chinana Tali, 42 years old, from Logo LGA, Benue State, and Pius Aondoakaa, 29 years old, from Logo LGA, Benue State, were both apprehended. The suspects, belonging to the Tiv tribe and hailing from R.C.M Abeda Mbadyul village, were handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and prosecution. The boy, Ushafa Tali, will be reunited with his mother.
Chinana Tali claimed economic hardship compelled him to make the distressing decision to sell his son, stating, “The hardship condition pushed me into agreeing to sell my son for 20 million naira to train the remaining five of my children.”
The NAPTIP representative, Oseafiana Chineyere, assured that the agency would conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. In a separate incident, the NSCDC FCT Command arrested a 23-year-old man, Yakubu Mati, on January 11, 2024, for vandalizing an armored cable along the Idu Metro Railway line. Mati was found in possession of a hoe, a saw blade, and a lighter.
