Breaking: FG Launches Committee To Reorganise Nigeria’s Security Outfits
The Federal Government of Nigeria has set up an inter-ministerial committee to review the growing number of security and para-military agencies in the country, with a view to streamlining their operations and improving efficiency.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The committee was inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, as part of broader efforts to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. Akume, who was represented by Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, said the initiative seeks to address the proliferation of unaccredited quasi-security outfits and strengthen coordination among existing agencies.
According to him, the expansion of security-related bodies over time has resulted in overlapping responsibilities, jurisdictional disputes, and operational inefficiencies that hinder effective service delivery. He added that the committee’s findings will guide government decisions on possible restructuring within the sector.
The panel has been tasked with compiling a full inventory of all security and para-military organisations, reviewing their legal and operational mandates, identifying areas of duplication, and assessing the effectiveness of newly established security outfits. It will also examine coordination mechanisms among agencies.
In addition, the committee is expected to recommend reforms to improve accountability and reduce redundancy, including proposals for mergers, harmonisation, reclassification, or even dissolution of agencies where necessary. Its work will also align Nigeria’s security framework with national priorities and international best practices.
Members of the committee are drawn from key security and government institutions, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Police Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations within a stipulated timeframe.
