A respected elder statesman, seasoned legal practitioner, and former Speaker of the old Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Benjamin Afagu Ekwealor, has passed away at the age of 89.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He reportedly died on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at his home in Nzam, located in Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The family confirmed his passing in an official statement released on Wednesday. Speaking on behalf of the family, Chuba Ekwealor paid tribute to his late father, describing him as a man who wielded the law as a tool for justice and societal advancement.

“He brought his legal expertise to bear across various spheres of public service,” Chuba stated.

Before pursuing law and politics, Chief Ekwealor began his career in education, serving as a school principal until 1977, when he retired and heeded the call to serve his community politically.

That same year, he joined the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and was elected to the Old Anambra State House of Assembly in 1979. He was re-elected in 1983 and eventually became Speaker of the Assembly, which at the time encompassed the areas now known as Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi States.

A trained lawyer, Ekwealor was later appointed to the Anambra State Judicial Service Commission in 1998 as a representative of the Nigerian Bar, a role he held for nearly 10 years, earning a reputation for principled stances and unwavering commitment to judicial integrity.

His influence extended beyond public service. In Nzam and across Anambra, Chief Ekwealor was revered for his humility, community service, and mentorship. He was a custodian of traditional values and a beacon of integrity in law, politics, and education.

He is survived by six children and numerous grandchildren. The family has announced that details of the funeral arrangements will be released in the coming days.
