[Breaking] House Of Reps Passes Crucial Second Reading On Mandatory Voting Bill

A bill mandating voting for all eligible Nigerian voters has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives. According to Naija News, the bill, sponsored by House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Daniel Ago, cleared the stage after a detailed debate on Thursday.

Ago, who led the discussion during the plenary session, explained that the bill aims to boost citizen participation in the electoral process. He added that voter apathy could be significantly reduced if the bill progresses through the necessary legislative stages.

However, despite the bill’s advancement, Mark Esset, a Peoples Democratic Party lawmaker from Akwa Ibom State, cautioned that merely making voting compulsory would not fully address the challenges facing the electoral system.

“Enacting a compulsory voting law without addressing the root causes is putting a bandage on a bigger issue. Many Nigerians abstain from voting because they lack confidence that their votes will be counted. If we are to enforce compulsory voting, we must also ensure that votes genuinely matter,” he remarked.
