The disturbance unfolded as more than 20 masked individuals stormed the venue, demanding silence from attendees.
In a dramatic moment, five of the masked men approached the high table and confronted the secretary of the Labour Party’s local government election committee, Prince G.O. Ndubueze, announcing his arrest.
However, party members quickly rallied against the masked figures, insisting that they provide a warrant for Ndubueze’s arrest.
In protest against the attempted arrest, over 500 Labour Party members marched alongside Ndubueze to the Aba Area Police Command, demanding accountability from the authorities.
After the incident, Ndubueze spoke to Vanguard, expressing his defiance against what he called intimidation from Governor Alex Otti.
He accused the governor of trying to impose candidates for the upcoming chairmanship and councillorship positions in the local government elections scheduled for November 2.
Ndubueze remarked, “I didn’t receive any warrant of arrest from anywhere. I don’t even know if they are policemen, but as a law-abiding citizen, I’m going with the police. Nonetheless, I will never yield to intimidation from Gov. Alex Otti. We will not permit him to impose candidates in this local government election.
“This is a governor who assumed office through a legitimate election but is now attempting to impose candidates. The Labour Party in Abia State will not tolerate such actions.”
