The Secretary of the Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Saheed Onipede, announced the sad news in a statement released by the agency’s spokesperson, Taofeek Lawal, on Wednesday.

Onipede stated that the deceased, a 68-year-old pilgrim from Shomolu Local Government, died while having his evening meal after Solat Maghrib (evening prayer).

Although the exact cause of death was not yet medically determined at the time of the announcement, Onipede suggested that it might be related to high blood pressure and the physical exertion from the Tawaf.

Onipede extended the condolences of the state government to Oloshogbo’s family and friends, praying that Allah forgives his shortcomings, grants him Aljanat Fridauos (Paradise), and rewards him for his Hajj intentions.

He also urged other pilgrims to take care of their health and avoid overexertion before the commencement of the main Hajj rites.

“The deceased has been buried in Makkah according to the principles laid down by the Saudi Arabian authorities,” Onipede added.

A board member, Waheed Shonibare, along with other state government officials and some pilgrims, participated in the janaza (funeral) prayer for Oloshogbo at the Kaaba.

Meanwhile, the last batch of pilgrims is scheduled to travel from Madinah to Makkah on Thursday to continue the spiritual journey, after spending the required four days in Madinah as per the guidelines of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

During their stay in Madinah, the pilgrims engaged in various religious activities, including regular prayers at Masjid Nabawi (the Prophet’s Mosque), visiting the Raudah (a special section of the mosque with spiritual significance), and praying at the tomb of the Prophet and his companions. They also visited sites such as Masjid Quba (the first mosque built by the Prophet in Madinah), Masjid Qiblatain (the mosque with two qiblas), and Mount Uhud (where Hamza and many companions were martyred).

Dr. Ahmad Jebe, Special Adviser to the Governor on Islamic matters, praised the conduct of the pilgrims in Madinah, expressing hope that they would continue to behave exemplary in Makkah.

Board Chairman, Imam (Engr.) Shakiru Gafar, also commended the pilgrims for their patience, endurance, and perseverance, assuring them that the board would strive to ensure their comfort throughout their stay in Makkah for the Hajj rites
