Breaking: Lagos State Set For 2025 Council Polls: INEC Unveils Timeline

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that local government elections will take place in 2025, covering the state’s 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

This announcement follows the recent Supreme Court ruling granting autonomy to local governments. However, questions have persisted about the constitutional status of the 37 LCDAs created from the existing 20 local governments, as they lack federal recognition.

Responding to these concerns, Gboyega Akoshile, the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, assured that the state remains committed to supporting the LCDAs despite their current status. He remarked, “The LCDAs were born out of creativity over 20 years ago, and we will continue to enhance that creativity under the present circumstances.”

Lagos APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, acknowledged the widespread inquiries from stakeholders regarding elections in the LCDAs. He stated, “Local government elections will be held in 2025 across the 20 Local Government Councils and the 37 LCDAs.”

Ojelabi emphasized the critical role of LCDAs in grassroots development, adding, “Since their creation, LCDAs have brought significant political and socio-economic progress across the state. As a progressive party, we cannot overlook their contributions to Lagos State’s overall development.”
