While encouraging them to carry out their duties with humility and treat litigants, witnesses, and bar members respectfully, Ariwoola stressed that the judiciary would not succumb to the clamor of the crowd.

Additionally, the CJN emphasized that, in discharging their duties, judicial officers must always prioritize the law over public opinions, sentiments, or emotions when making decisions on cases.

“The law remains the law, irrespective of whose interest is at stake. As interpreters of the law, we should strive to separate emotion from logic and assumptions from facts in all our actions.

We should resist being swayed by the actions or loud voices of the mob or crowd and avoid letting emotions or other factors cloud our judgment when deciding cases.

“Nevertheless, unnecessary and unwarranted statements can bring embarrassment not only to others but also to the judge himself.

Therefore, what needs to be asked should be asked, and what should be avoided must be avoided,” stated the CJN.

He reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring the comprehensive independence of the judiciary, and maintaining the trust and confidence of the public.
