The University of Aeronautic Engineering will be situated in Ezza South, while the University of ICT will be located in Oferekpe, Izzi Local Government Area. This initiative, originally conceived by former Governor David Umahi and promised during campaign speeches in January 2023, was continued under Governor Nwifuru’s administration despite criticism.
Addressing concerns, Governor Nwifuru emphasized the strategic importance of these universities for the state’s advancement, urging citizens to embrace the project. He highlighted progress, noting that the ICT University site has been cleared and fenced, with construction of key buildings set to begin immediately.
In a statement marking his administration’s progress, Governor Nwifuru disclosed that 80% of the state’s 2024 budget has been implemented, supporting various ongoing projects fully financed by his administration. He also outlined plans for supplementary appropriations to fund additional projects aligned with the state’s needs.
Governor Nwifuru further stressed the importance of producing job-ready graduates, criticizing current university courses for not adequately meeting 21st-century skills demands. He declined an honorary doctorate from Evangel University, advocating instead for universities to focus on producing graduates equipped for immediate employment opportunities.
Currently, Ebonyi State is served by one state university, Ebonyi State University (EBSU). During a recent convocation, Governor Nwifuru announced salary increases for academic and non-academic staff at EBSU, alongside reductions in school fees and increased monthly subventions. He also pledged automatic employment as lecturers at EBSU for Ebonyi State origin graduates with First Class Honours Degrees, extending the offer to all first-class graduates willing to lecture.
