Breaking News: Kenyan Reporter, Samuel Odhiambo Released By Authorities Following Ten Days Of Custody

Journalist Daniel Ojukwu, affiliated with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has been released from police custody after an ordeal that saw him detained by the Nigerian Police Force. Ojukwu’s detention began when he was covertly apprehended in Lagos on May 1st and subsequently moved to Abuja three days later.

During his nine-day detention, Ojukwu was kept from contacting his family or colleagues, sparking concerns about his whereabouts. His release came on Friday, following pressure from civil society groups and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who staged a protest at the Force Headquarters in Abuja demanding his freedom.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Ayuba Ede disclosed on Thursday that the decision regarding Ojukwu’s release rested with Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun. Ede pledged to convey the demands of the protesters to Egbetokun and Deputy Inspector General of Police Abiodun Alabi.

While details of the investigation and petition needed review, Ede emphasized that the ultimate decision regarding Ojukwu’s release lay with the Inspector General of Police.

This development follows heightened concerns about press freedom and the treatment of journalists in Nigeria.
