Breaking News: Police Block Access To Benue APC Secretariat In Ongoing Crisis

The Benue State Police Command has taken decisive action by sealing off the All Progressives Congress (APC) State secretariat in Makurdi and preventing the scheduled political meeting led by Mr. Austin Agada on Friday, March 1 and 3, 2024. The State Police Command, through a letter signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Samuel Gimba on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, instructed Mr. Agada to call off the meetings. This directive was based on an earlier letter from Governor Hyacinth Alia, received by the Command, which imposed a ban on all forms of political meetings and gatherings in the state. Governor Alia, in the letter dated February 27, 2024, cited the volatile security situation in the state as the reason for the ban.

The letter from the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Paul Biam, read, “I write to inform you that Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alla has banned all political gatherings in any form, be it inter or intra-party or groups in Benue State till further notice. This has become necessary following Intelligence on the volatility of the security atmosphere in the state.”

In response to the Governor’s directive, the Police advised Mr. Agada to suspend the scheduled meetings, citing the need to comply with the Governor’s directive due to the security concerns in the state. Subsequently, the Police, acting on these correspondences, sealed off the APC State Secretariat in Makurdi early Friday morning, with a heavy presence of stern-looking Police personnel securing the surrounding roads.

The situation highlights the tension and security challenges in Benue State, leading to the enforcement of restrictions on political gatherings for the safety and well-being of the residents.
