The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, delivered a stern caution to judges on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of upholding the judiciary’s integrity. Speaking at the opening of the 2023 Conference of Judges of the Federal High Court in Abuja, he urged judges not to compromise the court’s reputation.
In his address, the CJN stressed the need for judges to base their judgments and rulings on laws and rules rather than attempting to sway influential individuals. He emphasized the responsibility of judges to go above and beyond in justifying their appointments and cautioned against creating vulnerabilities that could tarnish the court’s image.
Ariwoola emphasized the challenging nature of the judicial role, especially in courts where judges sit alone rather than on panels. He urged judges to write judgments that the Court of Appeal would unequivocally affirm.
Further, he warned judges of the Federal High Court against taking their appointments lightly, highlighting the court’s status as the largest and most prominent in the country with exclusive jurisdiction over election-related matters. He urged them to work diligently to produce judgments and decisions that would withstand scrutiny from the Appellate Courts.
The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, reflected on the court’s growth since its establishment 50 years ago, noting its expansion to 37 Divisions and 95 Judges. Justice Tsoho highlighted the recent induction and deployment of 23 newly appointed Judges to enhance the court’s performance.
