The security agencies did not issue any prior warning about the checkpoint, causing a massive traffic jam that extended up to Nyanya Bridge, over 12 kilometers away from the blockade.
This situation left many civil servants, traders, and commuters from areas like Nyanya, Karu, Maraba, and Masaka, who travel to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for work, unable to reach their destinations.
After hours of being trapped in traffic, numerous commuters were forced to abandon their trips and return home.
The roadblock comes just three days before a planned nationwide protest against Nigeria’s economic hardships. Several youth groups have announced a nationwide demonstration starting August 1, citing the escalating cost of living and economic challenges as their main concerns.
The sudden military presence and resulting traffic chaos have heightened tensions as the protests approach.
