Breaking News: State Government Takes Action Assembly Complex Demolished Amidst Rivers Assembly Crisis
In a significant escalation of the crisis in Rivers State, the River State House of Assembly Complex was demolished yesterday by the state government. The demolition took place in the morning on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, following the destruction of the Assembly chambers by unidentified political thugs on October 30.
The demolition, executed with ten bulldozers, excavators, and heavy-duty machinery, saw part of the building, including the Assembly and the conference hall, fully brought down by 6 p.m. The state government cited advice from experts who deemed the structure’s integrity compromised due to structural defects from a recent explosion and fire incident.
Joseph Johnson, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, explained, “After the assessment of the integrity of the complex, the experts warned the government that continuing to use the building in its present state would be disastrous.” He added that the government had initially considered repairing the complex but ultimately decided on rebuilding it.
The government provided an alternative venue for the House of Assembly to conduct affairs during the reconstruction period. In the interim, plenary sessions commenced at the new venue, where Adolphus Orubienimigha was elected Majority Leader, and Dr. Godsgift West became the Substantive Clerk of the House.
The Assembly, in response to the attack, called on Governor Siminialayi Fubara to establish a Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate the burning of the state House of Assembly. The Speaker, Edison Ehie, described the attack as a clear affront on democracy, stressing the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Meanwhile, the House addressed the recent defection of 25 members to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring their seats vacant. Edison Ehie emphasized that the defection violated the constitution and announced plans to inform the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh elections to fill the vacancies.
