The announcement was made by Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Public Affairs at the university, in a statement released on Tuesday.
The statement read, “The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, chaired by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), has approved the appointment of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.
The appointment was confirmed during the 77th Extraordinary Council Meeting held on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. It will take effect from January 1, 2025, for a non-renewable tenure of five years.
“Professor Maikudi was selected as the best candidate from a pool of 10 shortlisted individuals, following interviews conducted by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board, in accordance with the university’s established regulations.”
It is important to note that the process leading to the appointment of the new substantive VC has been mired in controversy. Stakeholders had previously accused the Governing Council of attempting to appoint Maikudi, citing concerns over her lack of the required years of experience for the role. Additionally, the appointment process has caused division among members of the university’s Governing Council, with some boycotting meetings convened by the council regarding the decision.
