Breaking: Nigeria And Denmark Ink Landmark MoU To Supercharge Digital Innovation And Economic Growth

The agreement was signed through the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy during the Nordic–Nigeria Connect Conference in Lagos, themed “Forging Partnerships for Sustainable Impact.”

At the signing, Minister Bosun Tijani described the partnership as a landmark step in Nigeria’s ambition to establish a robust digital economy grounded in innovation and international collaboration.

“This marks the start of many initiatives between Denmark and Nigeria,” Tijani said.

“President Bola Tinubu has tasked our ministry with advancing an inclusive digital economy through strategic global partnerships. Achieving this requires collaboration with countries that share our vision, and Denmark is precisely that partner.”

Tijani highlighted that the partnership will focus on knowledge exchange, digital infrastructure development, and skills enhancement to help Nigeria position itself as a leading digital hub in Africa.

Denmark’s State Secretary for Trade and Investment, Lina Gandiese Hansen, noted that the MoU stems from Tijani’s recent visit to Copenhagen, where he inaugurated the Nordic-Africa Summit during the Tech Barbecue innovation festival.

“When Nigeria seeks collaboration, Denmark responds,” Hansen said. “Both nations are committed to leveraging technology, digitalisation, and innovation as tools for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.”

She emphasized Denmark’s view of Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa’s digital landscape and expressed optimism for long-term cooperation benefiting businesses and citizens in both countries.

Sub-national governments also demonstrated strong commitment at the conference. Representing Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Chief of Staff Samuel Egube noted that the event had shifted “from invitation to implementation,” with over 400 companies participating and partnerships beginning to yield tangible results.

Similarly, Enugu State Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai reaffirmed his state’s commitment to deepen collaboration with Nordic partners in agriculture, digital education, and energy to enhance food security and sustainable development.

Organizers explained that the agreement will strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, foster technology-driven enterprises, and expand innovation opportunities across sectors including agriculture, energy, logistics, and trade.

The Federal Ministry said the partnership aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, prioritizing digital inclusion, job creation, and economic diversification through innovation.

“We are laying a sustainable foundation for Nigeria’s digital economy, connecting innovators, entrepreneurs, and institutions with global partners to create lasting impact,” Tijani added.

With the MoU now in place, Nigeria and Denmark plan to launch joint initiatives in capacity building, digital policy reforms, and startup collaboration, positioning both countries as leaders in Africa-Nordic technological cooperation.
