Breaking: Nigerian Government Withdraws Treason Charges Against EndBadGovernance Activists

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the treason charges against the #EndBadGovernance movement, which had been initiated by the Inspector General of Police.

On Tuesday, Justice Obiora Egwuatu ruled on the matter after the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, withdrew the charges on behalf of the federal government.

Fagbemi, represented by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), M.D. Abubakar, announced during the court proceedings that he was exercising his authority under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution to assume control of the case from the Inspector General of Police. Following the court’s approval of this request, the AGF used the same constitutional provision to discontinue the trial for the 150 defendants involved.

With no objections from the various legal representatives of the accused, Justice Egwuatu granted the AGF’s request and dismissed the charges. Although the defendants were not present in court, the judge ordered their immediate release from custody.

President Bola Tinubu had instructed the AGF on Monday to terminate the charges against the defendants, many of whom are reportedly minors and legally exempt from such proceedings.
