Breaking: NIN Absence Mandate NCC Instructs MTN, Airtel, And Others To Suspend SIMs....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has instructed major telecommunications companies, including MTN Nigeria and Airtel, to deactivate phone lines lacking National Identity Numbers (NIN) and those with unverified NINs. MTN Nigeria revealed this directive in a corporate notice filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited, outlining the specific deadlines for compliance.

According to Uto Ukpanah, the Company Secretary of MTN Nigeria, the industry-wide directive necessitates the deactivation of phone lines without submitted NINs by February 28, 2024. For NINs that have been submitted but not verified, the lines associated with them are to be barred by March 29, 2024, if five or more lines are linked to an unverified NIN. If less than five lines are linked to an unverified NIN, the deactivation deadline is extended to April 15, 2024. Subscribers affected by these measures must undergo biometric and biodata verification before their lines can be unbarred.

This directive follows the NCC’s earlier instruction in April 2022, which required operators to limit outgoing calls for subscribers whose lines were not associated with NINs. MTN Nigeria is actively urging affected subscribers to submit their NINs for verification, emphasizing efforts to enhance service outlets’ capacity for a smoother and more efficient process. The company is committed to ensuring compliance with the NCC directive and is collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission to expedite the NIN verification process.

Expressing a commitment to being a law-abiding corporate citizen, MTN Nigeria stated its willingness to collaborate with the Federal Government in ensuring adherence to the industry-wide directive from the NCC. The company pledged to keep investors informed of progress and potential impacts, with updates expected upon the release of its FY 2023 results.
