In a statement released on Tuesday, Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the NCS, clarified that the decision to extend the Comptroller-General’s tenure lies within the discretion of the President, as outlined by the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and relevant public service regulations. Maiwada emphasized that, to date, the NCS has not received any official communication from the President regarding such an extension.
He further explained that appointments and tenure extensions for the Comptroller-General position are solely determined by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in line with the legal framework governing public service appointments. “No such directive has been communicated to the NCS by the appropriate authorities,” he stated.
The NCS also addressed circulating reports claiming that a statement from the State House had confirmed the extension, labeling the information as false and misleading. Maiwada urged the public to disregard the misleading report.
The NCS reaffirmed its commitment to its core responsibilities, including trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
