Breaking: Ogun State Grants Workers Day Off Over Fuel Hike, Announces Cash Relief

The welfare package, set to take effect in April 2026, will run for an initial period of three months and is aimed at easing the burden of rising transport costs following the recent fuel price increase.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, who said the initiative is designed to improve workers’ welfare and support their daily commuting needs.

He explained that the policy is also expected to boost morale and enhance productivity across the state’s public service.

Under the arrangement, eligible workers will be granted one day off per week in addition to receiving the monthly ₦10,000 transport stipend.

Onasanya noted that the specific day off for each worker will be assigned by accounting officers in ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure that government operations remain uninterrupted.

However, he clarified that some categories of workers will be exempted from the weekly day-off system due to the essential nature of their responsibilities.

These include medical personnel, judicial officers, teaching and non-teaching staff in schools, security agencies, accounting officers, heads of departments, and other critical service providers whose presence is required at all times.

Despite these exemptions, all affected workers will still receive the ₦10,000 transport allowance.

The Head of Service described the initiative as a timely response to current economic realities, praising the governor for prioritising workers’ welfare.

He said the policy reflects a “compassionate and thoughtful intervention” aimed at supporting the workforce while maintaining effective public service delivery.

Onasanya also urged workers to reciprocate the gesture by showing greater commitment, discipline, and professionalism in their duties, noting that the government remains focused on sustaining efficiency despite economic challenges.
