BREAKING: President Tinubu Confirms Passing Of Army Chief Lagbaja

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of the Army Staff, at the age of 56. The announcement was shared on Wednesday morning by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to Onanuga, Lt. General Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness. Born on February 28, 1968, he had been appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu.

Lt. General Lagbaja began his military journey in 1987 when he enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on September 19, 1992, as a member of the 39th Regular Course of the Nigerian Infantry Corps. Known for his leadership and dedication, he served as a platoon commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.

Throughout his career, Lt. General Lagbaja took part in several internal security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno, Operation Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.

A graduate of the U.S. Army War College, he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, underlining his commitment to professional growth and military leadership.

Lt. General Lagbaja leaves behind his wife, Mariya, and their two children. President Tinubu expressed deep condolences to his family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, honoring Lt. General Lagbaja’s legacy of service and leadership
