The confirmation came in a statement issued on Monday by the Academy’s Head of Public Affairs, Domo Umoekpe, in Uyo. The appointment takes immediate effect following the resignation of the former rector, Commodore Duja Effedua (Rtd).
According to Umoekpe, the appointment was conveyed through a letter from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, on behalf of the Federal Government. The minister urged Okonna to apply his extensive maritime expertise in steering the institution toward greater achievements.
The statement further highlighted that the appointment aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the Academy’s critical role in advancing the ministry’s objectives.
“Dr. Okonna is a distinguished maritime scholar with nearly three decades of dedicated service to the Academy. He holds prestigious academic and professional qualifications from globally recognized institutions, including the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden,” Umoekpe stated.
She detailed Okonna’s contributions to the institution, noting his roles as the pioneer Head of the Maritime Safety Department, pioneer Director of the defunct MAN Consultancy Services, and pioneer Director of the Strategy and Research and Development Directorate.
A distinguished member of the Nautical Institute (NI), UK, and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Dr. Okonna has been instrumental in the Academy’s growth and development.
