BREAKING: Sowore Takes Legal Action Against GT Bank For Freezing His AccountsHuman rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has initiated a lawsuit against Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), seeking N100 million in damages for the freezing of his accounts since 2019. Sowore claims that this action infringes upon his fundamental right to property.

The lawsuit, filed by his lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, at the Federal High Court in Lagos, alleges that GTB froze Sowore’s accounts without valid justification or prior notice. Sowore, who opened the accounts in 2015, asserts that the restrictions have caused him significant financial hardship, disrupting his business and daily life.

Effiong characterized the freezing of Sowore’s accounts as unlawful, stating, “The arbitrary freezing of my client’s accounts without due process is not only illegal but also a blatant violation of his fundamental rights.” Sowore demands the immediate unfreezing of his accounts and compensation for the damages incurred.

Despite multiple complaints and a formal demand letter, the bank has allegedly refused to lift the restrictions, leaving Sowore unable to access his funds and forcing him to borrow money for his expenses. He reported that his current, savings, and debit card accounts have been inaccessible since 2019.

In the lawsuit, Sowore seeks a court order to prevent GTB from unlawfully interfering with his accounts in the future and to cover the costs of the legal proceedings. He expressed frustration over the bank’s lack of response, stating that the financial embarrassment caused by the account freeze has severely impacted both his business operations and personal life.

The charges include a declaration that GTB’s actions in freezing his accounts are unlawful and unconstitutional, violating his rights under Section 44 of the Nigerian Constitution and Article 14 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Sowore is also requesting that the court mandate GTB to lift the restrictions and compensate him for the ongoing damage caused by the freeze.

As the case moves forward at the Federal High Court, Sowore seeks both financial restitution and the restoration of his banking privileges.
