Gunshots rang out at the Port Harcourt City Council as tensions escalated over the tenure of outgoing local government chairmen in Rivers State. According to reports, police fired shots into the air to disperse Ijaw youths protesting against the elongation of the chairmen’s tenure.

The youths had gathered peacefully at the Council’s Secretariat to demand the immediate departure of Allwell Ihunda and other former chairmen whose terms expired on June 17. However, the situation turned chaotic when police allegedly began shooting at the demonstrators.

“We came here peacefully to protest against those whose tenure has ended but are refusing to leave office,” said one of the demonstrators, who preferred to remain anonymous. “But the police started shooting at us unexpectedly.”

Witnesses, including Ichemanti, a leader among the Port Harcourt City youths, claimed that one protester was injured by police gunfire during the incident.

The gunfire caused widespread alarm throughout the metropolis, given the Council’s proximity to sensitive locations like the State Police Command and the State House of Assembly, which had been targeted in previous political unrest.

In response to inquiries, Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the State Police Command, denied police involvement in the shooting. She stated, “The police are not responsible for the gunfire. Our officers are on site to maintain peace and apprehend any individuals causing disturbances.”

The incident underscores the deep-seated tensions surrounding local government leadership in Rivers State, despite assurances from authorities to uphold public order and security.
