The state has witnessed a persistent cry of marginalization, stemming from insufficient power rotation and underdevelopment in certain regions, attributed to the current government. Over the years, the highest position in the land has rotated primarily between Edo North, Benin, and Esan, leading to discontent, particularly among the people of Owan and Esans.

In a video gaining widespread attention online, the seasoned lawyer and pastor articulated his approach to mitigate the sense of marginalization: ‘The agitation all over the state for governorship arises from perceived marginalization. I will love to run a government where every group in the state will have a sense of belonging.’
Reflecting on his past role as chief of staff, Ize-Iyamu emphasized intentional policies to ensure inclusive appointments across the three senatorial districts and 18 local governments: “When I was chief of staff I ensured as a matter of deliberate policy every appointment we did covered the three senatorial districts in the 18 local government that’s why people all over the state respect me and appreciate me. I have heard the agitation from Edo central for governorship and I will tell you frankly that I have a lot of friends there to a large extent I sympathize with them everybody has a right to be Governor.” CONTINUE READING
Ize-Iyamu delved into the dichotomies within Esan, highlighting the agitations in Agbazilo and Okpebho. He asserted, “The same way they are agitating for governorship is the same way the people in Owan will tell you that we have never had it the Benin’s have had it the Esans have had it, the Estakos have had it why don’t we also have it so that agitation is there. Even in Esan there is a dichotomy of Agbazilo and Okpebho. Those in Agbazilo where you have Esan East and Esan Southeast will tell you that this agitation should be for us because the two term, we have had government in Esan Land it has been Okpebho. Okpebho is Esan West, Esan Central and Igueben, so if we really want equity let it come to the local government that have not had it, so governorship in Esan land must come to the Agbazilo side.”
Addressing the underdevelopment in Orhionmwon and Uhunmwonde, he pointed out the neglect of these areas despite being sources of wealth for the state. He concluded, “Edo central, for example, has nothing, no industries, and the only thing you can point to is a state university that has been totally abandoned by the state government. Anybody has a right to be Governor. We are all one, and with God’s grace, we believe that our emergence will put a stop to all these agitations because if you have a Governor that believes in inclusion, the cry of marginalization will become less.”
Edolites have resonated with Ize-Iyamu’s approach, recognizing it as a potential solution to address the issue of marginalization in the state.
