Umahi urged the Nigeria Police Force to engage qualified forensic pathologists to conduct the autopsy and establish the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.
The request was contained in a letter signed by his legal representatives, Roy O. Umahi and Roy D. Umahi (SAN), which was made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday.
Habila, who was employed by the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences, Uburu, was on secondment to the Federal Ministry of Works in Mabushi, Abuja.
According to the letter, she died in a staff accommodation located within the minister’s residence at Umunaga, Uburu, in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The lawyers clarified that the building where the incident occurred serves as accommodation for staff and other persons attached to the minister and is separate from Umahi’s personal residence.
“On the night of her death, the deceased and another lady, a physiotherapist, were the only occupants of the building,” the letter stated.
Umahi also requested that the police refrain from releasing Habila’s remains to anyone, including her next of kin, Tanko Habila Wisdom of Sabon Gari, Nok, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, until the autopsy and other investigations have been concluded.
According to the letter, the request is intended to preserve the integrity of the investigation, prevent speculation and ensure that the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death are fully established before burial.
The minister further urged the police to treat the matter with urgency in the interest of justice.
