The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) is urging an increase in the budgetary allocation for the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) in the 2024 budget. Jonathan Lokpobiri, the President of the Council, conveyed this request in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja…….CONTINUE READING
Lokpobiri argued that a revision of the budgetary allocation for PAP is necessary to align with current economic conditions and expectations. He emphasized that the rapid depreciation of the Naira makes the current annual funding of N65 billion insufficient, as the impact in 2023 would not be comparable to that in 2024.
Addressing President Bola Tinubu, Lokpobiri appealed for a reconsideration and increase in the allocation to PAP. He highlighted the program’s success in positively affecting the lives of young individuals in the Niger Delta region.
Lokpobiri expressed the IYC’s dedication and willingness to collaborate strategically with Major-General Barry Ndiomu (Rtd), the Interim Administrator of PAP. In response, Ndiomu appreciated Lokpobiri for acknowledging the financial challenges faced by PAP, particularly due to the fluctuating value of the Naira against the dollar.
Ndiomu encouraged the IYC leadership to play an active role in promoting the success stories of the PAP. He urged them to enlighten young people in the region about the positive outcomes of the program and advised the youth to abandon laziness and indolence. Instead, he encouraged them to explore more significant ways to sustainably enhance their lives.
