Speaking in a conversation with tennis legend Roger Federer, the Grammy award-winning artist explained that the name originated from his childhood love for comic books and superheroes.

Burna Boy recalled spending hours sketching superheroes and even inventing his own characters. From that creative pastime, the name Burna Boy was born — a persona he would later carry into his music career.

He explained that his fascination with superheroes extended to imagining himself as one, with fire as his special power.

“I used to draw superheroes when I was younger. I would create comic versions of them. That’s how I came up with the name Burna Boy, because I wanted to be a character in the comic book,” he said.

In the same chat, Burna Boy also reflected on how Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti influenced his artistic journey. He revealed that he grew up listening to Fela’s albums, which his grandfather often played at home, shaping his sound and musical vision.
