He made this call during the closing ceremony of a two-day retreat organized for members of the House Committee on Defence by the National Defence College.
Kalu emphasized the importance of a space program in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity, noting that modern warfare now extends to space.
He highlighted the need for a space service chief, citing examples from other countries that have recognized the significance of space in defense strategies.
The deputy speaker urged a broader perspective in addressing security challenges, emphasizing that some warfare activities occur in space.
He stressed that overlooking the space dimension could undermine the mandate of protecting the country’s borders.
Kalu also referenced bills in the National Assembly aimed at strengthening the country’s defence architecture.
He explained that these bills would facilitate local manufacturing of essential weapons, promoting local content and enhancing the nation’s security.
Calling on the President to prioritize these bills, Kalu suggested converting military funding contracts into military industrial complexes, fostering value addition to the nation’s defense capabilities.
He expressed optimism that Nigeria, with an active space program, could attract neighboring countries to purchase military hardware from its production.
Despite being a signatory to the Artemis missions, Nigeria currently lacks an active space program.
