CAN Responds To Minister: Nigerians Demand Security Assurance To Curb Ransom Payments

In an interview with journalists in Hausa, Minister Abubakar alleged that the publicity surrounding the donation to pay ransom for the release of kidnapped victims in Abuja encouraged terrorists to demand more. However, Rev Hayab, speaking to Vanguard Correspondent in Kaduna, expressed disappointment, stating that despite reporting numerous kidnapping incidents to security agencies, they were often advised to continue dialogue with the bandits, with no tangible support from the security forces.
Hayab emphasized that those opposing the payment of ransom lacked firsthand experience and argued that when someone’s family member or close associate becomes a victim, they would comprehend the pressure faced by those paying ransom. He highlighted the reluctance to pay bandits but attributed it to the government and security forces’ failure to curb criminal activities, leaving victims with no alternative but to pay for their freedom.
The religious leader underscored the profound psychological trauma endured by both primary and secondary victims, including torture, humiliation, abuse, and various forms of inhumane treatment. Hayab called on leaders to prioritize addressing the prevalent criminality before making statements that might convey a lack of concern for the suffering of the people.
