CAN Sounds Warning Ahead of 2027 Elections Over Religious and Ethnic Manipulation

The Christian Association of Nigeria has cautioned politicians against exploiting religious and ethnic sentiments for political gain as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, made the appeal in a statement issued to commemorate this year’s Eid-el-Maulud celebration and extend greetings to Muslim faithful across the country.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Okoh warned that political contests should not be allowed to deepen existing religious and ethnic divisions, stressing that elections are temporary while the unity and stability of Nigeria must be preserved.

He said the celebration of Eid-el-Maulud, which marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad, provided an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on values including mercy, justice, compassion for the vulnerable, honesty and peaceful coexistence.

The CAN president noted that these principles were particularly important amid the economic difficulties and security challenges confronting many Nigerians.

Okoh also called on the Federal Government and leaders at various levels to move beyond promises and deliver tangible improvements in the lives of citizens, particularly in the areas of security and economic relief.

He maintained that effective leadership should be judged by the improvements citizens can see and experience rather than by political promises.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, Okoh urged politicians to avoid using religion or ethnicity as tools for securing votes, warning that political victories should not come at the expense of national cohesion.

He further appealed to Christians and Muslims to resist efforts by political actors to create divisions between the two faith communities for electoral advantage.

According to him, both religious groups have a collective responsibility to protect vulnerable Nigerians, promote peaceful coexistence and contribute to the development of their communities.

The CAN president expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future but stressed that hope must be supported by responsible leadership, justice and responsible citizenship.

He urged Nigerians to use the Eid-el-Maulud celebration as an opportunity to renew their commitment to peace, compassion and unity while working towards a nation where citizens can live with dignity, security and hope.
