The Anambra State Police Command has applauded the bravery of an Awka resident who courageously risked his safety to capture a video of an unidentified individual being abducted in the city.

The widely circulated footage shows three armed men suspected to be kidnappers operating in a stainless-colored Highlander SUV without a license plate. The assailants reportedly opened fire indiscriminately before seizing their victim in the early hours of Friday in Awka.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the command is now using the viral video to aid its investigation into the incident.

“The Anambra State Police Command is leveraging the viral video of three armed men involved in a criminal operation in Awka on June 27. They were seen driving a stainless-colored Highlander SUV with no plate number, shooting randomly before abducting an unsuspecting citizen,” Ikenga stated.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has commended the citizen who recorded the video, noting that the footage is proving instrumental in ongoing rescue efforts and could be key in saving the victim.

CP Orutugu emphasized that the courageous act highlights the vital role community participation plays in supporting law enforcement to maintain public safety. He said the police are working to identify the culprits, collect solid evidence, and bring those responsible to justice using the video footage as a primary lead.
