The CBCN’s guidelines, outlined in a circular dated August 15, 2024, address several issues, including the distortion of liturgy for inculturation purposes, irreverent handling of the Eucharist, and inappropriate activities during liturgical celebrations. The circular also prohibits taking multiple collections or fundraising during Mass and placing children on the altar for dedication, contrary to Church teachings that children are dedicated to God through baptism.
Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, highlighted these new rules during his sermon at St. Theresa’s Parish, Wumba, where he conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 200 parishioners. He emphasized that the circular aims to address abuses and enhance the reverence and integrity of Catholic worship.
Kaigama expressed that the Eucharist should serve as a powerful tool for societal transformation, combating moral decay, corruption, and other issues affecting both individuals and communities.
