Witnesses say Oluponna disrupted Acting Shepherd Adetayo Adetola mid-sermon, seizing the microphone and declaring his right to deliver sermons every second Sunday of the month. A viral video of the incident captured a heated exchange between Oluponna and church members, escalating tensions within the congregation.
In response to the chaos, the church’s task force, led by Akinbode Adjovi, took the drastic step of temporarily shutting down the parish for 40 days in an effort to restore order.
Adetola, recounting the disruption, alleged that Oluponna demanded that the N5 million—intended for church renovations and clergy housing—be handed over to his family. “On that Sunday, our shepherd was absent, and I was in charge of the service,” Adetola explained. “Everything was going smoothly until Oluponna snatched the microphone from me, insisting that he be allowed to speak. He claimed that the N5 million donation didn’t belong to the church but to his family, asserting that the church should be controlled by the Oluponna family, not the community or the CCC authorities.”
Adetola said that Oluponna also demanded to be made the shepherd of the church and to deliver sermons every second Sunday of the month. “We stayed quiet until he finished his demand,” Adetola continued. “Then, when I attempted to continue with the sermon, Oluponna returned, snatched the microphone from one of the choristers, and tried to take over the pulpit. That’s when we all resisted him.”
Tensions escalated further when Oluponna attempted to preach, prompting more resistance from the congregation. Shepherd Emmanuel Iperepolu also accused Oluponna of repeatedly threatening and confronting church members, which he believes intensified after the N5 million donation was made public. “He has been causing trouble and demanding that the money be handed over to his family, claiming the church belongs to them. Now, the authorities and the police are involved,” Iperepolu stated.
Kayode Ajala, Head of Media and Publicity for the Celestial Church of Christ, confirmed the temporary closure of the parish to prevent further violence. “The church is a place of peace, but when lives are being threatened, we must act. We cannot stand by and allow harm to come to anyone, which is why we decided to close the church temporarily while we investigate the matter,” Ajala said. “We are in talks with all parties involved, and once the situation is resolved, the church will reopen.”
Oluponna, however, declined to comment on the allegations, stating that the matter is a family issue between the Oluponnas and the church.
