Central Bank Of Nigeria Warns Of Increasing Economic Pressures On Citizens

The survey, conducted from July 14 to July 26, involved responses from 1,600 businesses and 1,650 households across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. It aimed to assess perceptions of current and future inflation trends, as well as the primary inflation drivers.

According to the survey, 83.7 percent of respondents view the current inflation level as high, with an overall perception index of -61.1 points. Businesses, with an index of -58.7 points, are slightly less concerned about inflation than households, which have an index of -63.3 points. Large businesses, however, are notably worried, reflected by an index of -70.8 points.

The CBN’s report also assessed consumer perspectives on economic conditions, family finances, and income, revealing a widespread negative outlook. Many households are expected to either exhaust their savings or incur debt to meet financial obligations. The report notes that consumer confidence is expected to remain low through October and November 2024, with indices of -21.8 and -9.1 points, respectively.

The report anticipates rising inflation across all reviewed periods, with indices indicating significant expected price increases in transportation, medical expenses, vehicle purchases, housing, and rents. Respondents identified changes in energy prices, exchange rates, and transportation costs as the main inflation drivers for July 2024.

Given the bleak financial outlook, the report emphasizes the need for the CBN to consider lowering interest rates to alleviate the financial strain on Nigerians.
