Led by Organised Labour leaders Joe Ajaero of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Festus Osifo of the Trade Union Congress, the protesters initially sought to peacefully express their discontent at the legislative building. They asked the security officers stationed at the building to open the gates and allow them to voice their grievances.

However, when their request was ignored, the situation escalated rapidly. Frustrated by the refusal of the security officials to allow them to demonstrate, the disgruntled protesters forcibly tore down the gates of the National Assembly and stormed into the complex to make their dissatisfaction known. This drastic action follows the recent protests by labour groups in Osun state, as well as an apparent show of force by security agencies in Abuja. Unionists have also been seen marching towards the Federal Secretariat and blocking major roads in protest.
