Chief Justice Ariwoola Raises Alarm: Politicians Menace Judges Over Political Cases
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has disclosed that certain politicians and other influential figures resort to intimidating judges to sway court decisions in their favor regarding political cases. He emphasized the heightened pressure and risks associated with adjudicating political matters in Nigeria, urging judges to uphold the rule of law amidst these challenges.
Justice Ariwoola made these remarks during a workshop organized by the Court of Appeal to review the previous year’s election petition tribunals and court appeals in Abuja. He cautioned judges against being influenced by public opinions or emotions and stressed the importance of conscientious decision-making in the face of threats or intimidation.
The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, highlighted the extensive workload faced by judges during the 2023 general election litigations, commending their efforts despite the challenges. She urged the judiciary to learn from past experiences and improve their processes.
Attorney General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), praised the judiciary for its crucial role in stabilizing the nation’s electoral process.
