Cholera Outbreak Claims 10 Lives In Ebonyi State

According to investigations by The PUNCH, the outbreak began on Monday and tragically included a nursing mother who left behind a 9-month-old infant.

During a Rapid Response briefing at the Iziogo Health Centre on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, confirmed the deaths and stated that approximately 20 others are receiving treatment. He highlighted the actions being taken by the Ebonyi State government to manage the outbreak and praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for allocating funds for the procurement of necessary medical supplies.

Dr. Ekuma noted that three treatment centers have been set up, including Iziogo Health Centre, Sudan Mission, and locations in Onuenyim and Ndibokote villages. He urged residents to take preventive measures to stop the disease from spreading further.

He emphasized, “If you experience symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, or any related signs, you should immediately visit one of the emergency treatment centers.” The Commissioner also mentioned that his emergency rapid response efforts aim to prevent additional fatalities in the area and acknowledged the support from development partners like the World Health Organisation and UNICEF.
