Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, appointed Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, is reportedly dealing with a serious but undisclosed health issue. This situation has led to speculation about potential successors among high-ranking military officials.
Sources revealed to SaharaReporters that Lagbaja has been hospitalized abroad, with his family arranging for his medical treatment. His absence from military functions over the past few weeks has raised alarm within the army. One insider noted, “He hasn’t been seen at the Army headquarters or any military event for three weeks. His health is concerning, and he has been moved out of the country for treatment.”
Another military officer commented on the impact of Lagbaja’s absence, saying, “Major Generals are acting without clear leadership, as there is no one currently in charge.” Concerns about promotions within the ranks have also surfaced, with a Major stating that the Chief of Administration is unable to sign the 2024 promotion list due to Lagbaja’s absence.
Sources indicate that Lagbaja’s health has worsened, with reports suggesting he is bedridden and unable to communicate effectively. “His condition is serious, and while the Army won’t disclose details, there were indications he was considering resignation due to his health,” one source shared.
As concerns grow, senior officers are reportedly lobbying for Lagbaja’s position, vying for influence among political and military leaders. His extensive military background, including previous roles commanding major divisions, underscores the challenges that his successor will face.
An Army spokesman, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, defended Lagbaja’s absence, framing it as a well-deserved leave after years of service. He emphasized that military personnel deserve time for rest and medical check-ups, challenging the notion that absence from duty indicates illness.
Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has also expressed support for Lagbaja, calling for empathy and a smooth transition of leadership within the army during this challenging time.
