As it stands, only three qualification spots remain to be filled, with Morocco set to host the 2025 AFCON from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
Côte d’Ivoire, the defending champions, defeated Nigeria 2-1 in the final earlier this year to retain their title.
Sudan secured their place in the tournament on Monday after a dramatic final round of qualifiers. Despite the challenges posed by ongoing conflict in the country, which has forced Sudan to play home games on neutral ground and suspended their domestic league since April 2023, the Falcons of Jediane managed to qualify. They needed just one point from their last two matches and, after a 4-0 loss to Niger, secured second place in Group F with a 0-0 draw against Angola in Libya.
Niger, who had a chance to capitalize on Sudan’s slip-up, narrowly missed out on qualification by a single point, despite a dramatic 2-1 win over Ghana, thanks to Oumar Sako’s last-minute goal in Accra.
In Group D, Benin advanced to the finals for the first time since 2019 after securing a crucial draw against Libya. Had Libya won at home in Tripoli, they would have qualified instead. However, Benin’s superior head-to-head record against Rwanda ensured their spot. Both Benin and Rwanda ended the group stage with eight points, following Rwanda’s unexpected 2-1 victory over Nigeria.
The remaining three spots will be decided on Tuesday. In Group C, Botswana and Mauritania are vying for second place, while Tanzania needs to win at home against Guinea to advance from Group H. In Group I, Guinea-Bissau must defeat Mozambique with a score that gives them the edge in their head-to-head matchup with the Mambas.
