The intense rainfall caused a significant portion of the road to collapse, resulting in a large crater and forcing motorists to find alternative routes.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Orji Uchenna Orji, Umahi described the flooding damage as unfortunate and criticized the frequent short lifespan of newly completed roads. He disclosed that a technical team from the Ministry of Works has been sent to assess the damage and promised to find a lasting solution.

Umahi directed the Director of Highway Rehabilitation to collaborate with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works to deploy experts who will evaluate the situation and decide on the necessary repairs. He expressed frustration that roads are failing to last even five years after completion, questioning the effectiveness of the current one-year liability period for contractors.

He also requested that Mothercart Ltd, the contractor responsible for the rehabilitation, join the assessment team to investigate the reasons behind the road’s failure. This affected section is part of Section Three of the Kano-Maiduguri road.

In a performance review meeting with Dangote Group, BUA Group, and Mainstream Energy Solutions Ltd, Umahi discussed the progress of road projects under the Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme. He stressed the need to reassess the liability period for federal projects to ensure their durability and value for money. Umahi also highlighted the importance of timely project completion and emphasized that clear agreements on milestones and timelines will be established for ongoing projects under the tax credit initiative.
